About the cooperative

No outside owners. Just members.

Harborlight Multi-Purpose Cooperative was started by neighbours in Cebu City who wanted a safe place to save and a fair place to borrow. It is still run the same way: by the members, for the members.

How a cooperative works

Six principles we answer to

Every cooperative registered in the Philippines follows them; they are written into the Cooperative Code, Republic Act 9520.

  1. 1

    Open to anyone

Membership is voluntary and open to anyone of legal age who can use our services and accept the duties.

  2. 2

    Run by the members

One member, one vote. The general assembly elects the board and approves the budget and the dividend.

  3. 3

    Owned by the members

The capital is the members' own shares; the surplus is theirs to share or to keep in the coop.

  4. 4

    Education every year

Part of every surplus pays for seminars for members and officers, as the law requires.

  5. 5

    Working with other coops

We belong to a federation, and part of the education fund goes to it.

  6. 6

    Care for the community

A community development fund pays for projects in the barangays where members live.

Elected by the members

The board and committees

The board and committees are elected at the general assembly for staggered terms; the manager and staff are appointed by the board.
